I want to get this down because I know eventually the details will get fuzzy, so here it goes! I spent my whole pregnancy with zero problems, other than bad evening sickness for a while. My doc was SURE I would have to be induced at 38 weeks, but always mentioned how fast things can change. On Friday, May 27 (the start of Memorial Weekend) I was at school and my left foot was quite a bit more swollen than my right. This was not abnormal as the heat was making me swell, but the huge size difference was odd. Also I was having some bad tightening. My school nurse (love her!) insisted I call my OB who wanted me to go to L&D to make sure I didn't have blood clot. All was fine and after being monitored for a while, I wasn't even having contractions. (I had been having some small ones at my NSTs). So I was sent home with orders to simply take it easy that weekend and have a good rest of the school year.
Saturday I sat around in the basement while my husband and FIL worked on the girls room and our new master bedroom. Around 1pm I went to Walmart to get diapers for my son and pick up a pizza for lunch. I got home and proceded to do more sitting around on the couch. At 5:00 I suddenly got a little wet. I figured I was drinking so much water I just peed a little bit. Quite irratated, I went upstairs and changed, only to be wet again by the time I got back downstairs. Then I realized it might have been my water breaking. I called my OB who was not on call and the on call doc said to come in. I frantically started throwing clothes in a bag and told Jesse to stay with Jacob and I'd call him from the hospital if I needed him (I think I was in denial that it was my water). On the way I called my parents who were on vacation AGAIN and I couldn't get ahold of them. By the time I got to the hospital I was soaked. I was practically crying when I got to L&D. They had me change and checked me and it was my water.
Things started happening quickly. I was hooked up to monitors and IVs (the nurse blew one of my viens trying to get an IV in). I was put on a mag drip which made me throw up and feel awful. I also got a steriod shot in my hiney for hte babies lungs. I finally got ahold of my mom and told her they were going to fly me to another hospital. I didn't know where for sure. I also told Jesse to pack Jacob's bag and send him to his parents and pack a bag for himself. All this was done on the hospital's phone bc I didn't have reception. Jesse got there just as the helicopter arrived. The first helicopter had a leak (!) so they had to call for a second. I found out I would be going to Univeristy of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
It was so wierd being rolled down the hallways of the hospital knowing I was about to get on a helicopter. Jesse had left to make the hour trip to Baltimore and hoped to beat me there. I was texting people as they were loading me onto the chopper-lol. The helicopter was very small inside and the lower half of my body was in the cocpit! It was very loud and the door was vibrating. I was scared it was going to fly open!
We got to the hospital in 18 mins and I was taken to L&d. The doc checked me and I was barely 2 cm dialated. They did a sono and baby A was head down and baby B was breech. I was told I could try a vaginal delivery and they could pull the second baby out. I opted for a c section because we didn't know if an epidural would work for me and there's always a chance the second baby needs to be born by c section anyhow. We decided they would do the surgery around 10am the next day when the new docs and nurses would be fresh and ready to go. The babies had plenty of fluid still and I was not really contracting. I tried to get some sleep, but it was hard bc of the monitors. Not to mention and constant gush of water.
Around 2ish I started feeling the contractions more and at 2:30 asked for some pain meds. They decided that since my contractions were really picking up they needed to do the surgery then. I was so afraid and I was shaking and in a lot of pain from the contractions. All the pain from my son's delivery came flashing back. I was shaking so badly they offered to skip trying the epi and just put me under. My arms were tied down and they put the curtant up. They put the mask over my face and I was begging them to make sure I didnt' feel anything.
The next thing I knew I was waking up in a recovery room with an oxygen mask on my face. I asked if the babies were OK and how big they were. I was told 1 something and I started to freak out. Then Jesse told me that was kg and they were 4lbs 2oz and 4lbs 3oz. I was so thirsty and was finally allowed to have ice. I had a magic morphine button that was lovely. I wanted to see the girls so when I was finally ready to go to my room they took me by the NICU. I was still pretty drugged so I don't really remember seeing them at all.
In my room Jesse and I both slept for quite awhile. A pediatrition said the girls were doing well for being 34 weekers. I was not able to see the girls until around 6pm night. It was so hard seeing them so tiny and helpless. I spent the next 5 days walking a path between the NICU and my room. Leaving them behind when I was discharged was very hard. They spent 13 long days in the NICU. the nurses there were fabulous and made it a bit easier for me knowing they were very well taken care of.
They are now 2 1/2 months old and healthy, happy and thriving!
